BOLIVIA VOLUNTEERS

MAKING A DIFFERENCE - NOT A PROFIT

ENVIRONMENT

The population of Cochabamba is increasing rapidly, and there is now clear evidence of a deterioration in the natural surroundings. Here are just some of the causes.

  • The increase in the use of environmentally-damaging products.
  • The methods used in the disposal of household and industrial waste.
  • The ever increasing number of manufacturing plants.
  • The outdated systems used in the supply of domestic utilities.
  • The record numbers of vehicles on the city streets.

Recycling is almost unheard of in Cochabamba, with practically all the city´s waste being incinerated, or dumped into vast land-fill sites.  Major industries increasingly rely on the use of rivers and streams for the disposal of their toxic waste.  Air and noise pollution from cars, buses and commercial vehicles is worse than ever before.

The consequences are now becoming evident

  • The air is less clear than it was, bronchial and pulmonary diseases are on the increase, and there are many days when those living close to the incinerators suffer from itching eyes, sore throats, and difficulty in breathing.
  • Often, sometimes overnight, parts of the city are covered in a layer of microscopic dust.
  • The natural wildlife habitats along rivers and streams is under threat, and La Laguna Alalay to the south of the city is now known as ´La Laguna Verde´ (The Green Lagoon)

Until recently, a lack of education and awareness of the potential problems has meant that little thought has been given to climate change, the effects of chemical pesticides, the benefits of recycling and renewable energy, and the consequences of other other environmental issues on the ecosystem.

You will be working with local government agencies & partners to make a lasting contribution to the ecosystem and general environment in Cochabamba, generate a sense of environmental awareness, and encourage members of the community to become active in achieving environmental stability for the present, and sustainability for the future.

Here are just a few areas of focus you could be involved in.

  • Collecting water samples to test and record temperature, pH, and oxygen levels.
  • Monitoring and helping oversee land reclamation projects.
  • Researching alternative and renewable energy sources.
  • Participating in television and radio promotions.
  • Planning and implementing recycle campaigns.
  • Co-ordinating local groups, societies and community leaders, helping them understand the importance of environmental issues, encouraging them to preserve and avoid further potential damage to their environment.
  • Visiting garages and motor dealerships to promote the awareness and control of vehicle emissions.
  • Planning and implementing eco-activities with schools, and industrial manufacturers.

Whilst a basic level of Spanish is required for this project, previous experience is not essential as all relevant training and instruction will be given.
